Working class socialist to contest re-run Glasgow council by election
Working class socialist campaigner, Anne McAllister, to stand again for the North East Ward in Glasgow City Council by election on 20th March.
The by election is being re-run after last November’s election saw the wining Labour candidate, who works for Glasgow City Council, fail to notify her employer that she was leaving the job after being elected.
Easterhouse campaigner and Socialist Party Scotland member Anne McAllister said: “I’ll be standing once again for the North East ward as the candidate of the Scottish Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition.
“This working-class community desperately needs a fighting Socialist councillor. I have a long record of campaigning, from helping to successfully defeat the bedroom tax locally, to supporting workers’ picket lines at postal sorting offices and cleansing depots.
“If elected, I would campaign for the council to set a no cuts/needs budget, utilising all financial powers, uniting with the trade unions and the community to demand the funding lost in austerity from the Scottish and Westminster governments.
We need a socialist society, where no one is cold and hungry. I’ll also be fighting for the nationalisation of the energy companies and supermarkets to bring down bills. Vote Scottish TUSC for a £15 an hour minimum wage and benefits that meet the cost of living.”
Glasgow City Unison Branch Secretary (personal capacity) and Scottish Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition steering Committee member, Chris Sermanni said: “I’m supporting Anne as unlike the SNP, Labour and Greens she is opposed to all austerity and attacks on the working class.
Our city suffers growing food bank queues, long health and care waiting lists, rising homelessness, and underfunded services.
Close to a billion has been cut from Glasgow in the last decade with the SNP, Labour and the Greens voting for cuts.
In the last by election Reform UK posed as anti-cuts and anti-establishment. But how would their leader millionaire Nigel Farage know anything about the struggles of working-class families
All Reform UK, and their new councillors some of whom were Tories when the last by election took place, offer is racist division, that lets the greedy bosses off the hook.
Reform UK support private schools, more private sector involvement in the NHS and attacking workers rights.
Anne and Scottish TUSC increased our vote in the ward, in November. We are standing to voice the need for a new mass workers’ party based upon the trade unions.
All socialists, trade unionists and community campaigners should support us”.
