Student debt, low pay, zero-hours, cuts: Capitalism has failed – Fight for socialism
William Campbell, Aberdeen University Socialist Students
Students and young people are increasingly coming up against capitalism! Many who study are facing rising costs to living expenses and rent, resulting in rising debt.
Young workers including many students, face low pay and zero hour contracts. Education at all levels is being cut. Colleges and schools face cuts from the SNP government.
University managements, with a corporate profit making agenda, are making education a commodity rather than a right.
This is leaving fewer and fewer opportunities for young people or avenues to achieve decent careers. The fury of teaching staff and students has been seen with the massive partially successful UCU trade union strikes against pension attacks across universities earlier this year.
Socialist Students played a leading role in mobilising students to join staff on picket lines, protest and occupy campuses in support.
It’s possible this autumn we could see school teachers take strike action for better pay. Outside of campuses, young people have also led bold strikes, McDonalds workers have led and won battles for better pay and work conditions.
TGI Fridays young workers are striking against cuts to tips.
It’s time to get organised and fight back. We need to build a mass movement to topple this hated Tory government with young people, workers and trade unions fighting together.
We need to fight for socialism.
