Postal Workers must win
Gary Clark, Sub area rep.
Scotland No.2 CWU
Postal workers across the country are getting ready for a second round of strike action. These are not strikes, as is being put forward by the Royal Mail management, against modernisation or a workforce who just don’t want to work. This is a strike to defend a national service which we can be proud of.
On the one hand you have got the management who are only after massive profit to line their own pockets, led by Adam Croizier the highest paid public sector worker in history, with no real interest in providing a public service. There can be no doubt that they also have the backing of the Labour government who seem hell bent on revenge against the CWU since they where defeated by them when they tried to sell off 49% of Royal Mail to the private sector.
On the other side you have got 120,000 low paid postal workers who want to stop the slash and burn tactics of the Royal Mail Management and provide a first class service to the public.
Its clear one of the other reasons that we have been provoked into this action is that the management and the government want to smash the CWU. As was proven with the leaked document which quite clearly stated that they wanted to bypass the union and virtually de recognise the CWU.
Also on the same side as the management you have the Labour government who would love to see the breaking up of the power, which the CWU has to increase the chance of getting a private sell off of Royal Mail.
This must be the first time in history where the term modernisation will mean the worsensing of the service. If Royal Mail get away with their plans unchallenged then the service will move to even later in the day.
It’s also being put forward by our critics that this is a London dispute. This could not be further from the truth as was seen with the massive 76% yes vote in the ballot from across the country. The facts are that the first area to take industrial action was the East of Scotland area when a small unit in Fife, Cowdenbeath, took action back in April.
Postal worker are looking for support of the public and the organised workers across the country so we can win this vital dispute, which would be a massive victory for workers across the country.
