Where next after N30 – Socialist Party Scotland meetings
We will see history being made on Wednesday when 3 million workers from 28 public sector trade unions strike against the ConDem attacks on pensions. As has become clear from the workplace meetings, the massive majorities for strike action in ballots and the response to Socialist Party stalls on this issue this is a strike that has huge public support. It’s widely seen as an opportunity to hit back at the cuts and austerity programme of the government and not just on the issue of pensions.
The propaganda offensive by the ConDem’s and sections of the media has had little effect. The BBC poll today showed massive public support for the strike with 61% of people believe public sector workers are justified in going on strike over pension changes. Very significantly the poll showed among women that 67% backed the action – hardly surprising when you consider that more than two-thirds of public sector workers are women. But also an incredible 78% of 18-24 year olds support the strikes.
N30 will have the impact of a social earthquake, after which the social and political balance of forces will have changed decisively. The idea of mass struggle, the potential power of the organised working class, will be shown in practice in front of an audience of tens of millions. Socialist Party Scotland is calling for the trade union movement to name the day for at least another one-day public sector general strike in the new year if the ConDem’s don’t back down.
